![]() ![]() Weyn is certainly not the first fiction author to call attention to the impending energy crisis, but her attempt to do so in a novel (which seems to be aimed for middle school readers even though the characters are seniors in high school) falls short of expectations. ![]() Countries will wage war on one another for the sake of oil, stock markets will crash, and general uncertainty will reign. In the mean time, the public will do everything possible, including siphoning off gasoline from their neighbors’ cars, to cling to the way of life they have grown accustomed to. Though the book is short (less than 200 pages), the message comes across loud and clear: alternate forms of energy will only be taken seriously once we have depleted the world’s oil. ![]() Empty paints a picture of what American life will be like when fossil fuels truly start running out. ![]()
